Goldendoodles have been around since at least the 1990’s, and the idea of the breed most likely came from the Labradoodles. Originally the doodle was created to achieve many of the amazing traits of the Labrador, but allow more families with allergies to be able to have one in their home, thus they were bred with the poodle to obtain more of the low shedding properties.

My experience growing up with both Labs and Retrievers, is that while both breeds are extremely intelligent and non aggressive breeds, the Labs tend to have a higher energy level and need for exercise and mental stimulation, and an obsessive need to chew on anything and everything; while the Retrievers are a bit more laid back and not requiring as much exercise and attention. I suspect someone had the same feelings and decided breeding the Golden Retriever to a Poodle was an even better idea, and I’m so glad!

Both Poodles and Golden Retrievers are in the top 10 smartest dog breeds in the world, so it’s no wonder that with careful breeding we can produce exceptional Goldendoodles that are smart, easy to train, and make great service dogs, as well as just amazing family pets! They are also extremely social dogs, loving to be with their humans as much as possible! And once you see their goofy, silly side you will be hooked for good! They are sure to keep you laughing, and will also make sure you are never lonely (some say they even want to keep you company in the Lou. ;-) ). They seem to feel so much of our emotions, and even read your thoughts at times. Not to mention that by creating a hybrid dog with genetically health tested parents, carefully bred for temperament and health, can extend their life, due to health issues that can take a pure bred dog much sooner than their time. Here at BrewerDoodles, we do our best to not only breed for health, by health testing all our parents, but carefully selecting parents that will only produce low to non shedding, allergy friendly puppies. All our puppies are ethically and responsibly raised in our home and socialized puppies raised on curriculum also help to ensure they will be the best.

Bernedoodles haven’t been around as long, but we find they make stiff competition for our favorite breed! The Bernese Mountain Dog is known to originate from the Swiss Alps, and was used for their strength to pull carts, drive cattle, guard livestock as well as being an amazing family pet- probably found laying on the cool, cobblestone floors with a child lying their bodies on them in the evenings. They have a playful, goofy side, but are extremely loyal and affectionate, while having a bit of a stubborn side from time to time. :-) Bernese are so lovable, however their lifespan is usually no more than 7-10 years, due to their prevalence to cancer mostly, and I’m convinced the first breeder of them decided to try to create a breed that would have many of their beloved traits and stunning colors, yet make them lower shedding a live longer lives! The Bernedoodles are unique I believe because of their amazing colors, yet versatility to create different variations of the colors, and also to have some of all sizes, for those who don’t have the space or desire for an 80 or 90 lb lap dog!!! We are able to produce Bernedoodles of all sizes, and we find we love our minis as much as our standards! A lot of breeders introduce more poodle to achieve the smaller size, and while you can get a bit smaller that way, we want to keep as many of the favorite traits of the Bernese in our lines as possible, such as their loyalty, affection, and a bit less exercise needs, so we find our minis in the 25-40lb range to about perfect for everyone. And we are able to manage to keep our puppies Bernese percentages in the 40-50% range.
